Summary
[ Content Index | Poetry Singles ]
When the family cat died, I felt compelled to write a little poem about it.
If the cat had died five years earlier, I probably would have been more upset.
As I was in my know-it-all 20's, I met it with a jaundiced eye.
But, I think this is perhaps one of my earliest poems that doesn't completely suck.
I'm posting it on that merit.

Tiger tails a-plenty
- and I shall gaze forever into your eyes
As a shooting start races the sky
- for my eyes mist at the thought that you forgot me
Whiskers whispering into the wind
- it is a dainty song as you tag along
Across the fields of grass, so long
- and my eyes mist when I remember the tail bend
Clasping claws of tender nails on a new linoleum tile
- but no longer do I hear the patter
And I can no longer look to you when I have something the matter
- and my eyes mist when the truth falls into denial
Bittersweet beads of toasting tears
- they are left behind in an honor unbound
For nothing is left to love now that you are not around
- and my eyes mist at my misplaced terror and fear
God's gift to me was your presence
- for you helped me through my strife
And as I look into the glory of a possible life
- my eyes mist in your remembrance now that you are gone
